Impacts of Imperialism on Morocco
The French culture from the 1900’s left a strong impact on the culture of the Moroccans. One of the aspects of the French culture that shows the impact of colonialism in Morocco is the French Language. After the French took over Morocco, the French language has become widely spoken. French is usually spoken in government and business. The Spanish language is also a part of the Moroccan culture that shows the influence of imperialism. Spanish is spoken by many people in northern Morocco, which was where the Spanish Protectorate had control. Today, about 20,000 Moroccans know Spanish.
France and Spain - the Benefactors
French imperialists hoped to enhance the French economy to help pay the Prussian indemnity and to recover from the Great Depression of the 1870s. They also wanted to block British expansion in West Africa. On a more idealistic level, French imperialists envisioned the creation of a Greater French Empire that would promote what they considered to be the universal ideals of the Enlightenment. Coincidentally, such an empire was expected to extend and glorify French culture.
Effects of colonizing Morocco
Some of the positive effects that were the outcome of Colonization of the French and Spanish in Morocco is that both Spanish and French Protectorates allowed the sultan, ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz, to maintain his integrity. This wouldn’t upset the political system that was previously set in stone in the country. Also, at the Algeciras Conference, it was decided that France and Spain would have control over the Moroccan ports and collecting custom dues. This would not only protect the ports from raiders and pirates but also increase their economy from the custom dues collected.
However, Morocco still had problems politically. The opposition to French occupation and problems within the government caused rebellions, wars, and other political problems. This would severely lower the trust between the French and the people of Morocco. Also, even though the French and Spanish allowed the country to keep its Sultan, he had little to no power. Thus, he didn’t hold power and was kept there as a dummy.
